Adventurous Journey | The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Rwenzori with Galaxy International School Uganda Students

The 2019 Duke of Edinburgh trip has come and gone. This year we ventured out to Fort Portal and the Rwenzori mountains to tackle our Bronze and Silver journey. The trip took place between February 11th to the 14th and we took 26 Bronze participants and 8 Silver participants. We are excited to say all students completed their adventurous journey requirements.

On the first full day of the trip we set our eyes high and far. We trekked out for the formidable Mount Kansangura elevation 3012 meters. It was quite the challenge for everyone involved. 28km straight up a mountain then 28km straight down. There were obstacles, exhaustion, and lessons learned. Everyone got back to camp learning something new about themselves.

The next day we went to natural hot spring and learned about the local lore of the male and female springs. We boiled eggs and potatoes as snacks for the hungry participants. Some even brought some hot spring water home, they say it’s good for skin ailments. Afterwards we visited Crater Lakes. The silvers had to have another 10 km hike to meat their more strenuous, silver requirements.

Other activities included playing football with a local school and visiting the Toro King’s Palace.

Our participants set up their own tents and the entire camp, built camp fires, cooked their own food; acquired a number of survival skills and learnt the importance of team work and resilience. Through this excursion, all our participants were able to meet the requirement of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award Program at Bronze Level.

Our sincere gratitude to all our valiant participants for their commitment, cooperation, discipline and perseverance. We also wish to thank our parents for all their support and confidence in us; our Award leaders for chaperoning our participants; the Representatives from DofE, Uganda for all the guidance and support and to our School Administration for all support rendered to our gallant Participants.

We look forward to many more expeditions!
